North Pitt High School Student Killed in Wrong-Way Crash That Also Claims Another Life
A tragic crash on U.S. 13 near Staton Mill Road claimed the lives of 17-year-old Jorborius Whitehurst-Close, a senior at North Pitt High School, and 44-year-old Eric Colley on the evening of February 11, 2026.
According to the North Carolina Highway Patrol, the collision occurred around 8:30 p.m. when Colley was driving south in the northbound lane and collided head-on with Whitehurst-Close’s vehicle. Neither driver was wearing a seatbelt. Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash.
Whitehurst-Close was a wide receiver and defensive back for North Pitt High School’s football team and was remembered by teammates for his dedication, positivity, and leadership.
“I just thank God for allowing me to have a relationship with this young man, JB,” said Ethan Wilson, a friend and former teammate. “He was a good kid, he just brought a light into North Pitt and to the football team, and he showed up every day, ready to work.”
Pitt County Schools officials have mobilized a team of counselors, social workers, and mental health professionals to support students and staff. Sara English, Executive Director of Student Services, described the atmosphere as “heartbreaking” and said resources will remain available for students in the coming days.
Whitehurst-Close’s family, friends, and the North Pitt community are mourning the loss of a young life taken far too soon.
