Two Killed in Three-Vehicle Crash at Ashland County Intersection

Two Wooster residents were killed Friday morning in a three-vehicle crash at a busy Ashland County intersection, according to the Ohio State Highway Patrol.

The crash happened around 6:00 a.m. at the intersection of State Route 511 and U.S. Route 30 in Vermillion Township.

Investigators say a 2015 Dodge Dart traveling north on Route 511 failed to stop at a stop sign and was struck by an eastbound 2024 Peterbilt semi-truck. The impact pushed the semi across the median into the westbound lanes, where it then collided with a 2020 Ford Transit van before both vehicles came to rest off the roadway.

The driver of the Dodge, 23-year-old Malachi James Harley John Whitehead, and the driver of the van, 61-year-old David L. Kuhns, both of Wooster, were pronounced dead at the scene.

A juvenile passenger in the van was airlifted to OhioHealth Mansfield Hospital with serious injuries but was later treated and released. The semi-truck driver, a Florida resident, was treated for non-life-threatening injuries.

Authorities said all occupants were wearing seat belts, and neither alcohol nor weather conditions are believed to have been factors. The crash remains under investigation.
