Pitt County Community Mourns After Fatal Wrong-Way Crash Claims Two Lives

The community in Pitt County is grieving after a tragic wrong-way crash on U.S. Highway 13 Wednesday night claimed the lives of two people.

According to the North Carolina State Highway Patrol, the crash happened around 8:30 p.m. near Staton Mill Road. Authorities say 17-year-old Jorborius Whitehurst-Close, a senior at North Pitt High School, was traveling northbound when 44-year-old Eric Colley, who was driving south in the northbound lanes, struck him head-on.

Troopers reported that neither driver was wearing a seatbelt. The investigation into the circumstances surrounding the crash remains ongoing.

A Promising Young Life Remembered

Friends and teammates are remembering Whitehurst-Close as a bright light both on and off the football field. A member of the North Pitt High School football team, he was described as hardworking, positive, and deeply loyal to his friends.

Close friend Ethan Wilson shared that they were “like blood brothers,” recalling JB’s strong presence and dedication to his team. His passing marks the second heartbreaking loss for the school community this school year, following the September death of teammate Elisha Barrett in another car accident.

A Devoted Father Gone Too Soon

For Eric Colley’s family, the loss is equally devastating. Loved ones describe him as intelligent, kind-hearted, and a devoted father to his one-year-old daughter, whose first birthday was celebrated just two months ago.

Family members shared cherished memories — from his love of trivia to learning piano as a child — and emphasized how much he adored being a father.

“Love on your people while they’re here,” a family member said. “Tomorrow is not promised.”

Funeral and memorial service arrangements for both families have not yet been announced.

This tragedy has left a deep mark on the Pitt County community, as friends, classmates, teammates, and family members lean on one another during an incredibly difficult time.
