Utah Corrections Sergeant Robert Hill Dies in Rollover Crash
Robert Hill, 62, a sergeant with the Utah Department of Corrections, tragically died Sunday morning in a single-vehicle rollover crash on the city’s west side.
Salt Lake City police responded to the crash near 700 North and 8000 West at 7:25 a.m. Investigators reported that Hill’s vehicle left the roadway while traveling south on 8000 West, rolled multiple times, and came to rest in a field. Hill was ejected from the vehicle and pronounced dead at the scene. No other vehicles were involved. The Utah Department of Public Safety’s Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Team is investigating the cause of the crash.
Hill had served with the Utah Department of Corrections since 1996, holding multiple roles over nearly three decades, including assignments in the maximum-security unit at the Draper facility. At the time of his passing, he was working in enforcement at the Utah State Correctional Facility.
Jared Garcia, executive director of the department, described Hill’s death as a “profound loss for our department and for our entire law enforcement community,” offering condolences to Hill’s family, friends, and colleagues. The department has also made support services available to staff coping with this loss.
Hill is remembered for his dedication, professionalism, and nearly 30 years of service to Utah’s corrections and law enforcement community.
