Five Injured, Including Three Students, in Shooting at Iowa City Ped Mall

A shooting in Iowa City early Sunday morning has left five people injured, including three students from the University of Iowa.

According to the Iowa City Police Department, officers were responding to reports of a fight at the Pedestrian Mall—commonly known as the Ped Mall—around 1:46 a.m. when gunfire broke out.

Police say five individuals were struck by gunfire, with at least one person currently in critical condition. Authorities have not made any arrests, and the investigation remains ongoing.

In a message to students and staff, University President Barbara Wilson confirmed that three of those injured are University of Iowa students. At this time, officials do not believe the students were specifically targeted.

The Ped Mall, located in the heart of downtown and closely connected to the university campus, is a popular gathering spot, especially during weekends. Following the shooting, large portions of the area were blocked off as investigators processed the scene.

Police have released images of several persons of interest and are asking the public for help in identifying them. Anyone with information, photos, or videos related to the incident is urged to contact authorities.

University officials are encouraging students and the wider community to support one another during this difficult time, as many are left shaken by the violence.

The investigation is still in its early stages, and more updates are expected as police work to determine what led to the shooting.
